I broke my last breville slow cooker by smashing the pot in the sink and I spent ages trying to decide what to buy to replace it as it was always a bit on the hot side. I saw this crock pot reviewed by Which? and decided to purchase it.It is well made, the outer casing feels sturdy and looks good. The lid sits nicely on top and feels cool to touch even after cooking and the ceramic pot is well made and thick. The digital controls are super easy to work out. you can set for Hi, Low and there is a countdown timer. When it reaches zero it switches to keep-warm mode. The pot is round, not oval, but it was still big enough to fit a whole chicken inside; I was worried that the shape would prevent me from cooking joints of meat but it was fine.Temperature-wise it was just right, it has a true low temperature setting unlike my last one which boiled everything too quickly and burned food to the side. I haven’t really tried the high setting except to heat up some cornflour which I added to the end of cooking so I can’t comment on how that works. Everything I’ve made has been lovely, the sauces don’t separate or curdle. Meat falls off the bone and vegetables cook well, including hard root vegetables.I can’t find anything to fault with this. Really good quality and a joy to use. I’ve used it every day for the last few weeks as I think I’m addicted!EDIT-June 2013The high setting works well too, taking about half the time to cook something on slow. Great for doing jacket potatoes and sweet potatoes in 3-4 hours.

Having owned a very large Morphy Richards slow cooker years ago and not used it very often (eventually sold it), I was a little anxious about buying another. I needn’t have worried as this slow cooker is superb! We stopped eating processed foods for main meals nearly two years ago and this meant that we were making all our dinners from scratch – even down to the stock we used. As some stock recipes call for the bones to be cooked for 24 hours, I decided it was time to invest in a new one. Having looked at many reviews, I decided that one with a countdown timer would be the most useful for us. Since buying it I have cooked up beef stock (24 hours), chicken stock (12 hours), slow roasted joints of pork (16 hours and then roasted in the oven for a superb crackling), vegetable tagines (5 hours), curries and soups.Pros:Is a perfect size for us (a family of 4).Doesn’t take up too much room in my (minute) kitchen (although it can’t stay out on the side when it’s idle as I literally have zero space on my kitchen side).Cooks well and at a good rate, with meals coming out wonderful and flavoursome.Pot and lid go in the dishwasher.Cons:Not big enough to do a double portion of dinner (not many leftovers after we’ve dished up!)Is fairly fragile (I have chipped it the teeniest bit on the outside – just cosmetic, but annoying nonetheless!)Overall, I am super pleased with my purchase and this has become one of my essential kitchen items.

I looked at loads of reviews before choosing a slow cooker.Although I live on my own, I did want a cooker that would accommodate a reasonable sized joint of meat, and I knew I could freeze any surplus food. I chose one with a countdown timer as I’m not always sure when I’ll be back home. The cooker seems well built – with a big heavy ceramic inner pot. On first use there was a slightly disconcerting smell of warm electrics coming from the control panel – it has settled but I can still smell warm electrics if I put my nose close to it – guess that’s inevitable. The pot does get hot on the outside – so make sure nothing meltable is touching it.The pot is large – my second meal was a 3.5kg piece of pork – but I have found that as long as it is at least half full of cooking juice- it seems to work fine. The timer is easy to use – you can switch from high to low whenever you want – but it would have been nice to be able to have say – one hour on high and then the rest on low…maybe I’m asking too much.It cooks beautifully – and I am very pleased with the meals I have made. The pork was super succulent after 7-8hrs, I’ve made ribs & beans and that was a great success too. It converted a little tray of lamb bones into a magnificent tagine. One curious fact about slow cooking – with the pork – there was virtually no fat in the juices – it remained on the pork and was tasteless! It seems to have extracted all the yummy fat flavour but left the fat in situ. The lamb dish did shed much fat, but that was easily skimmed off leaving a delicious sauce. You may find it best to decant the cooking juices and reduce them on a normal stove to concentrate the flavours.I’ve yet to use it while I’m out as I can never get up early enough to do the prep!!!All in all it seems to be a great buy – either for a family, or a lone greedy guts like me! I look forward to weekends even more now – as I plan what other hapless bit of meat will be the next offering to my crock-pot!

I very much like how the Crock-Pot Digital Countdown Slow Cooker, 4.7L worksas you can add or deduct time after seeing how the food is cooking is a bonusand very helpful in the learning process of finding how this piece of equipmentworks with different recipes and allows one far more freedom from the start.I decided to work with this cook pot from the beginning in this manner rather then put it on and leave it altogetherby doing so I could observe how slow or how fast each of my recipes were doing and know what to expect another time.It has been so helpful that I have only had a few occasions when I have not used this cooker since it arrived. The slower heat is not a dead slow and the next level up is a very reasonable heat, but you do need to think a headanyhow with a slow cooker. The lovely aroma because all is simmering, fills the home.I was an owner of a very older type cook pot some years ago and it gave up on me after a good many years service and I neverreplaced it until now, I wished I had replaced it sooner but saying that the digital type was not around and I think ifyou are going to get one it is well worth getting this type. The size is just ideal, as I wanted one that could take a reasonable medium joint or meat with vegetable’sand for four of us it is ideal size for a good 4 medium/larger portions or for putting aside a couple of portionsfor freezer or have the next day.If you go for a smaller cook pot, it will not allow you these options. The size for the worktop is comfortable. The 2 heat settings are very good and the keep warm is so handy.I really do not see the need of a recipe book as most things cooked in an oven can be cookedin this cook pot, however take a little care as the side walls of the cook pot does get hot.The handy see through glass lid has a little hole through the top to let steam out, you need to be aware of thisbecause this can hold a very little water after washing up and will drip when wiping up but soon dries out. I recently cooked: liver and bacon with red/green peppers, onions with beef bouillon and rice, it came out very tasty.Pork/ Lamb joints, meat balls also Milk puddings, egg custard, bread and butter pudding and soups. If you have any doubt about this cook pot, do not it is a very handy piece of equipment saving a great deal onenergy costs not having to heat the main cooker and allowing to cook the more economical meats and veryhandy in the summer months when a main cooker will give out a greater amount of heat.I am pleased with it and hope it will give us as many years use as the last one did, which was 15 years.

Absolutely fantastic slow cooker and well worth the money. I had picked this one out a long time ago but hesitated and it sold out. I signed up to the John Lewis email alert but never received anything and by chance happened to search for it again one day and found it on here for half the price it is being sold for at JL!I had read other reviews that it burnt food so on its first use we made a stew and set it on low for the day. We were disappointed with the result and it was still very watery and tough. Now we set it on high for 4 – 5 hours and it is perfect. Stew, loin, ribs and curry have all come out great and it takes so little effort. It is helpful if you can stir it every so often as bits around the outside may burn, but it’s nothing to worry about if not.You can also adjust the temperature from low to high or high to low at any time while it’s cooking if you change your mind, and you can adjust the timing too without any phaffing around stopping and restarting it which was a great bonus. The keep warm function is great too but maybe a quiet beep would be handy to let you know when it’s done.Overall I’m very happy with it and have already recommended it to anyone who will listen!

Having used slow cookers very successfully for many years I decided to try the 4.7 litre Crock Pot. The lid of my very large slow cooker had been dropped on the kitchen floor and was smashed. Rather than replace it I decided it was time to look at a mid-size slow cooker, now that the family has grown up. I bought this one with some money my sister-in-law sent for Christmas, and have been using it continually for two months to make beef, lamb or chicken casseroles or minestrone. Being a “morning person” I enjoy preparing a variety of vegetables straight after breakfast, and leaving them to slow cook with the chosen type of meat. In the early evening the meal is ready to serve, and there is exactly the right amount left over to freeze for a second meal another time. This is the best slow cooker I have ever owned. The meat and vegetables are cooked to a perfect stage of tenderness without losing shape, colour or flavour. When the slow cooker first arrived I was rather taken aback to see how small the controls are. I was used to turning a sizeable switch on each of my previous cookers, and I wasn’t happy initially with the idea of just touching a small piece of metal and being guided by a pinpoint of light. However, I have got used to the controls now. My only criticism is that I would like to be able to set the cooker on high for a couple of hours, and leave it to switch automatically to low after that. I think this would be essential for anyone who is out all day. I don’t find the pot too heavy to manage, but it is quite heavy and anyone who has a problem with lifting things might be wise to get some advice. Apart from that I would recommend this crockpot unhesitatingly.

I bought this slow cooker about 6 months ago after much research into which would be a good model to buy. Oh my goodness I only wish I’d bought it years ago. With two little ones and hectic days, it is such a gift to be able to chuck everything in it in the morning and get on with your day, knowing that come dinner time when you’re exhausted and just want to collapse with some nourishing food inside you – there it is all warm and waiting for you. The timer and warm function means you can relax knowing if you’re running late the food won’t be ruined. It has a huge capacity and something like chilli or bolognaise (with a side of rice/pasta/mash) will easily feed a big family gathering of 6 greedy adults and 4 children. To be honest I usually fill it to the brim even when I’m cooking just for the four of us – whatever we don’t eat that evening I freeze or we have a night or two later. Either way, lots of delicious meals ready with minimal effort. It is extremely economical not just in the amount of power it uses, but we regularly feast on ‘Fridge Surprise’ – any sad and lonely veg left in the fridge at the end of the week is never wasted but turned into delicious and nourishing stews with the edition of a few storecupboard ingredients. Cheaper cuts of meat become tender and succulent in it. And it cleans up beautifully too. What can I say? I call it my magic cooking pot for a reason!

It’s my first slow cooker, and now I want to buy a small one and a bigger one. For my first meal, I decided to use it like a slow oven so I cooked a lamb shoulder, in one whole piece, studded with garlic and rosemary, a few small tomatoes and a few sun dried tomatoes, salt and pepper. No additional liquid. I left it for 8 hours, forgot to switch it off in the morning, and when I came home it was still on the “keep warm” function (which I thought lasted for 4 hours but must go on for 12). The lamb was succulent and moist, full of flavour, and the meat juices collected in the pot and were used as gravy (I should have skimmed off the fat). It was exceptionally tasty. I don’t understand how the liquid doesn’t evaporate during the very long cooking period, nor why the lamb didn’t dry up on top (it was exposed to the air, not submerged in the juices). A great success and I am now trawling the internet for other recipes: slow cooked potato gratin, puchero canario, bean stews, etc. I am also looking forward to using it as a bain marie, for making terrines and puddings, because I now believe that the water bath won’t evaporate (even though I still don’t understand it! the lid just rests on top without a seal, it can’t all be refluxing back into the pot). Anyway, I am totally sold on slow cooking and I love this crock pot.

In this day of fast, convenience food that has poor nutritional value, it is essential that people (especially families) get back to basics and a crock-pot is a great way for busy families to eat food that has a great nutritional value. I am a very busy person and this is perfect — put the meat (if you choose), vegetables and spices in the pot following one of the thousands of great recipes one finds on the internet, program the meal for high or low with the hours you need for cooking and do what you need to do. The food comes out flavourful and, as we are told by experts in the slow food movement , more nutritious for having cooked slowly. If you are a busy career person, take 5 minutes before you work to throw in the ingredients, program the crockpot for 9 hours, go to work, and come home to the smell of your dinner, warm and ready to put on the table! As an example: this crock-pot cooks one large chicken (>2 K) with vegetables for four on the bottom.NB: I wait until the ceramic cooking bowl is complete cooled down before I wash it in order to prevent cracking.

I bought this because the three I’ve owned before this one didn’t seem to understand the difference between boil and simmer, and I got tired of having burnt food when I woke up in the mornings. This crock pot does what it’s supposed to, which I’d expect since it’s an American brand. It’s a great size for a family of four, plenty of room to cook a whole chicken or a brisket. I love that when it’s finished with the cooking time it goes automatically to “keep warm,” and does it correctly every time. I’ve never had a burnt meal since I bought it – this is the best slow cooker I’ve ever owned. Also, we use it in our caravan when we go caravanning – it’s safe and doesn’t suck a whole lot of power. Throw some food in there in the morning, go out and enjoy your day, and dinner’s done when you get back in the afternoon. You can even make oatmeal in it overnight and have a nice breakfast when you wake up. Easy to clean, too, nothing really sticks to it. Lovely item. Insert is dishwasher safe.
