I purchased this 50″ Toshiba 4K TV via another online retailer a week ago for a similar price. I’ll highlight the negatives, followed by the positives and why I rate it a 5 star TV.As others posts have mentioned, it’s not quick. When left on standby overnight and turned on in the morning, it feels as though it’s coming out of deep hibernation. The power light turns green, and it can feel like an eternity before the program actually appears. The instruction leaflet is terrible, tiny print and nonsensical. To attach the stand is a 2 person job, try turning TV upside down on a sofa which helps (be careful!) The 4 flat head screws attach underneath, and the 4 round head screws to the back of the stand.Power light may bother some, I find it unobtrusive myself.Build quality is okay for the price, the bezels are not the slimmest, however it still looks smart. The grey / pewter effect looking stand adds some welcome interest.Remote control is compact, numerical buttons in particular are very small. Might not be suitable for older people because of this.General lag, as mentioned earlier with powering up, the same applies with general use. Changing channels there’s a noticeable delay, it all works, but don’t expect instant responses.Encountered a couple of glitches, powered up, got sound but no picture (Freeview through aerial). Switched off from the mains and problem seemed sorted. Occured again, repeated process, retuned channels and all appears okay so far.Sound not the greatest, although more than acceptable. Now the positives, picture quality is very good, once you’ve tweaked the settings to suit your tastes. If you like apps, this has access via Amazon to a huge selection, plus a fair amount of free ones.Navigating the menu is pretty straightforward, holding down the “Home” button is a shortcut to the settings.Despite the plastic build, it’s a smart looking set. The 50″ option fitting nicely on my unit, much better than my previous 42″ LG set. There’s an unmistakable retro vibe to this TV (Hello Tosh, got a Toshiba? For those of a certain age! Lol ) you know it’s not a Samsung, which is what appealed to me.In conclusion, this TV ticks so many boxes. It’s a Toshiba, although manufactured in Turkey, it feels well put together, so gives peace of mind. It’s not without slight irritations for some, the slow responses being the most obvious, however I can overlook these given the overall value on offer.A Samsung or Sony may well be that much quicker, but you’re probably looking at twice the price at least. All things taken into account, I have no hesitation rating it as a 5 star purchase. The price is amazing value, accept some of the limitations, and you won’t be disappointed.

For context in 2012 I was looking for a high quality large TV for our lounge. I bought a top-of-the-range 60 inch Samsung LED backlit LCD TV and was horrified by the backlight bleed – irregular clouds of white. I tried another and it was the same. I can’t remember what the state of OLED was at the time, but I went for a 60 inch plasma instead and was happy. Over the years I realised that when it came to replace it I would have to get an OLED because I hated the not-black black in the LCD TVs. Fast forward to 2023 and the plasma died. We’re planning to move house sometime soon so buying a new OLED TV which may not be suitable for the new house seems like a bad idea. The plasma died too soon. After seeing used TVs sell for far too much I decided to buy a new TV for the lounge that was cheap enough that it could be demoted to another room in a new house. Being close to Thanksgiving I waited for black Friday deals and saw this TV for a 5% discount. There were cheaper ones but without QLED and from what I understand about the technology I thought it was worth the extra. I considered both Hisense and TCL TVs but the equivalents were actually more that this one. I knew that although it has the Toshiba brand it is actually made by Vestel, but I have some experience of products from that Turkish company so I wasn’t deterred. So I’ve had it a week now and I am quite pleased with the TV. There are no misbehaving pixels which rather surprised me (the plasma had one and my Samsung ultrawide monitor has one). For the price the picture seems very good and the QLED makes it much more vibrant that regular LCD. As expected the screen displays grey from the LED backlight instead of black, however it is mostly uniform and therefore not irritating like the bleed from those Samsung TVs had been. I am using the TV with a separate 5.1 sound system but when I first set it up the internal speakers did not sound terrible to me.Mechanically the TV shows its price – it is just good enough. The manufacturing finish is only medium quality and on the stand the TV will easily wobble. I have it wall-mounted and this makes it obvious that the chassis can flex a little. Of course this is no problem once it is on the wall. The VESA mounts are 400×200 which is minimal for a 65 inch TV and they are low on the TV – I had to use adaptor plates to extend my wall mount so that it does not sit too high. The Fire TV UI seems fine to me – just another build of Android TV. There seems to be plenty of configuration options – too many for me to care about much. 4K streaming from the included apps is fine although I may still use my NVIDIA Shield TV via HDMI because I am used to it. What I am a little disappointed in is the time the TV takes to turn on, especially if it was last configured to the tuner. Compared to the older TVs I have been used to it is too long. I would prefer a TV whose tuner is separate from the Android TV. However this is not a deal-breaker and I’ll just get used to it – I stream far more than I watch live TV anyway.Overall I think I made the right decision buying this TV. The big brands have non-QLED TVs for more than this and I am not convinced that there would be anything about them that would make that extra money seem worth it. Whilst I accept that some of the competitor QLED TVs might be better, they do cost more, and in many cases a lot more. I definitely recommend this TV as a good value mid-range large TV.UPDATE: I have got used to the slightly slower start-up time. Sometimes it seems quite quick and other times it takes longer. It is tolerable. Streaming on Fire TV is also mostly fine, but I found that ITVX could sometimes seem a bit stuttery, as if the picture was overcompressed and this was causing a decompression lag. The difference was obvious when watching ITVX from my Shield TV so I am mostly using the latter (except for C4 which is still not supported). I found that my old HDMI cables needed to be replaced to higher spec so that 4K and CEC ARC worked properly, and the Amazon basics cables are great. I still have no regrets about buying this TV, however I shall be buying an OLED TV in the future because LCD blacks in a darkened room are simply not black enough.

I purchased this TV for my 92 year old Grandmother who is hard of hearing. About 12 months ago i changed my nan from an older style tv to a newer flat screen LCD TV, ever since i installed it she has complained that she is unable to hear any dialogue coming from the TV. As a result i have been on the look out for an easy to use, simple, good quality audio TV to replace the old one for my nan. When i came across this TV i studied the reviews and most were extremely positive, as a result i ordered this TV for her. The box this TV comes in is huge, however it is a 55″ set. Unpacking and screwing on the included stand was very easy and completed in about 10mins. One thing that really attracted me to this TV was the simplicity of the TV remote. My nan get’s very confused with complicated remotes with lots of buttons on! It has dedicated buttons for Netflix and Disney which are easily identifiable. The TV itself is very attractive with a central stand. It looks super smart and appears very well made.Turning on the TV requires you to sign into an amazon account, once this is completed the TV updated itself via the ethernet connection i plugged into the rear of the set (it also has wifi if you are unable to hard wire). Once the software update completed i went through the standard fire stick set up which is super easy. I installed a few basic apps for her like Netflix and Britbox. The app store on this TV is vast and just like a normal fire stick. The TV scans for digital Terrestrial channels and puts them in order on the TV guide. Selecting live TV is as easy as pushing one button on the remote. Picture quality was excellent! Crisp and clear images with good contrast, brightness and details visible. Changing to fire OS again was super easy for my nan, you just press the House button and it takes you to the front screen. Now for the most important test, could my hard of hearing grandmother hear what the actors were saying – YES! She could hear every word! I was super chuffed! In summary this Toshiba Fire TV is absolutely amazing value for money! The set is super smart, picture quality is fantastic and the audio is loud/crisp and super clear! My nan is over the moon with the TV. I have waited over a week to write this review to ensure my nan is happy with the TV, she still is (which is very unlike her to be honest!)I can not recommend this TV enough to others. Fire TV OS is a great smart platform and to have it built into a TV set makes it so much easier for elderly people – my nan would never be able to change a HDMII source on the TV!Fantastic TV – Amazing Value for Money.I hope that you found my review helpful.

I can’t understand why there are bad reviews! This tv 50inc one is super! Came on time, very protected in it’s box, stand was easy to fix to tv, once standing it fitted nicely on our tv stand. It was easy to get the sky q box working through the tv! Great sound and picture but not sure how to change the picture quality ie: the contrast etc. Great purchase and a good price, after reading the bad reviews I was a little sceptical tbh but pay no attention to these reviews! Great tv tbh! Would recommend a buy if you want a bigger tv!

My old 50″ plasma tv uses around 500w so is expensive to run. Due to the energy crisis I used my laptop for tv stuff and the projector in a dedicated room for occasional movies which deserve to be bigger, better and more epic, but really wanted something that was energy efficient for some tv shows that I wanted to see in the lounge larger than the laptop and with surround sound etc. Energy prices had kinda made me reticent to use the plasma, plus HDR would be nice which the plasma couldn’t do. I wanted something fairly basic at around £400+, but reviews ended up with me looking at a more expensive U7 Hisense or even an LG OLED if I wanted something more like the plasma in image quality, so when Argos had this 65″ tv on offer for £307 with 10% of, I figured £276 including delivery would be a good stop gap and better than the laptop for general tv etc which would be it’s main use. The plasma had a large border so this 65″ tv with it’s thin border isn’t much larger.Out of the box it’s very bright and uses a lot more energy than the 85w its spec suggests for SDR. It’s too bright, overly sharpened and colours are over saturated and unnatural. It gives people a kind of plastic look. As I will use the tv mostly in the evening, I found reducing the back light to around 25% uses approx 60w, and in natural colour mode and with the sharpness turned down to 5 it looks a lot more analogue and natural. Black levels are better than expected too, despite the low native contrast (helped by the reduce back light level), and I can’t say that image noise due to poor compression/processing etc with streaming content has yet to be noticeable (the brighter the image, the more likely it will be visible). Putting it into local dimming mode increases energy and contrast but works quite well (blooming might be an issue but haven’t used it enough to notice any yet). Will probably use that for sci fi stuff and HDR rather than normal tv content. I have to manually change between those modes so some presets on the remote would have been useful. At 500w the plasma uses a kW every two hours. With my current settings this 65″ Toshiba tv uses a kW every 16 hours, which is way more than I would ever use in a day (maybe 3 or 4 hours a day at most), so although energy consumption is 5 or 6 times more than the laptop (around 11w when the battery isn’t charging, and 30w when it is), it uses just a few pence for a few hours use and barely adds anything to the bill (approx 5p or 6p a day if I use it), especially compared to the plasma. Two hours on the plasma is like almost a weeks use on this 65″ tv for me.Only negatives would be the FireTV interface. It seems a little slow and clunky, but I could use my Roku 4K instead if I found it too cumbersome. It took some time to set up. It did a firmware update immediately, and later one for the remote. Despite looking everywhere and even Googling, I couldn’t see how to add this device to my Amazon account, so ended up using the remote to manually type in my details. One issue some people may find is the on/off and control button is on the bottom underneath the tv screen. If that’s where you have a centre speaker or sound bar you won’t be able to use the button (most will use the remote anyway), and you’ll have to make sure there is enough gap between the two or it can accidentally operate the button after it warms up. Mine did that – it scrolled down through the menu and then switched off the tv before I worked out what was going on. Other than those minor quibbles there’s not much wrong with it. I didn’t have the HDMI issue some people had with the set not seeing connected devices. Maybe I connected thigs up in the right order to avoid that issue without realising. More luck than judgement. As an alternative to the laptop and as a replacement to the Plasma (which still throws a very nice picture) I couldn’t be more pleased. Very energy efficient, good natural colours and contrast and an overall image that is far better than expected when set up. Unbelievable value for money. I really can’t see me buying an OLED any time soon just for tv stuff.

Picture quality is really very good once you turn off all the usual refresh rate interpolation puff and turn the sharpness down to a less eye fatiguing level. You don’t need to log into Amazon to use this as a display for a separate box (e.g. fire stick or roku), this means it will last much longer than just the apps that can run on the unit.I have it attached mine to an AV receiver and a ROKU and have not needed to give the TV my wifi details. There’s a brief nag / splash screen that shows if you turn it on before the AV receiver has woken up, but otherwise it just works via the external HDMI.The back of the TV case flexes a bit where I have attached it to a vesa mount, I think the supplied base would do the same too as that attaches to the same spot as the vesa mount, so that might cause a slight angle on the TV as the top hangs very slightly away from the wall. For the price this is an exceptional TV.

It has a good picture and sound, very good value for money. One word of warning, you can’t setup this tv without connecting up to the Internet and Amazon account (or at least I couldn’t). I was hoping to just fire up the tv and connect an IPTV box to it via HDMI.Once setup there was no problem.

  8. glenn smith

For the money it’s a brilliant TV the quality is very good and applications work so fast with no lagging ,the TV stand could be a bit better, once you learn how to navigate the menu it’s a very good TV
